Yard Charges Whilst Undergoing Repair?

I put my boat into a local yard last winter with a view to them undertaking repair and paid storage charges up to 1 April. Because of the poor weather, they were unable to start the repairs until April, and I expect them to finish some time this month.

I'm really pleased with what they've done so far, but I received an interim bill which included storage charges for the month of April, and I imagine I might get one for May, too.

It's not a lot of money in the scheme of things, but it does look odd that I'd be charged storage in the yard for a period whilst they're working on the boat.

Is that normal?

not normal if substantial works undertaken that will absorb the storage

If its the repair companies own yard then no charge but for companies that rent space in a yard, they pass on the charge.

In some yards/marinas, yes. My boat was brought ashore for some quite substantial repair work (and brought ashore specifically and solely for the work to be done, with an instruction that I wanted it relaunched as soon as possible). Storage was added to the quite large bill - the repair bill was fifty times the storage charge.

You will be paying for it anyway though a lot of yards might absorb the cost of yard space in to the work cost. It will be easier to judge the fairness of the charging. as now they can only invoice you for time and stuff. However if they could reasonably have carried out the work earlier (not just because they have been busy) they should be making an effort to compensate you for the delay.
