I have just bought a wooden Mahogony clinker with a recently reconditioned Yanmar YS? 12. I should be taking delivery of the boat in a couple of days. Is there any information I should know regards the engine. Is the dipstick in the oil filler cap? Any problems people have encountered etc.

Robust engines, getting a bit old now about 30 years.Prone to low oil pressure, there is a mod to the side cover with a bush on the oil pump shaft. If it is a YSE12 the E is 3 to 1 gearbox.

Make sure the anode is still serviceable with 75% remaining. It`s imperative to have anode in good condition as engine is raw water cooled.Do not use PTFE tape on anode plug as you need good bonding to engine.
Spare parts can still be had contact D Chesterman at De La Hunty Marine Tel:-

Make sure exhaust bend is clear and check all water entry holes to engine.

Happy sailing/motoring.

Exhaust bend is particularly prone to failure, the original is cast steel. Replacements are available in bronze. If the original fails it can be particularly difficult to get the remains out from the exaust box.

I shouldn't think that this would be a problem in a launch - but the engines do not like to be heeled too much as they are notable for recycling oil from the sump. Scary if/when this happens.

Regards

Many thanks for your answers. The boat arrived....safely, and after half an hour in the water, the bilge had not pumped once.

From the looks, and dubious information I have, the engine was reconditoned, and fitted around 5 years ago. It ran perfectly for the few moments when I went to view. As the boat out of the water, we didn't run the engine for long obviously.

Got to give it a check today, before starting, but all seems ok on the first glance.

Still not looked at, or found the engine number yet, it was dark by the time we got the boat into the water....so will find out later.

Email pictures of boat on the beach are on http://community.webshots.com/user/malcsworld

Hope to get a few on route to moorings today.

Boat is called Three Js, but I'm going to rename her. Suggestions?

Malc.
