Anyone got any experience (good or bad) with the new Yanmar 8LV series engines in 320 or 370 HP trim, and/or with the accompanying Yanmar sterndrive (ZT370).

I've no experience, but this engine / drive combo interests me, so this will pop the thread up to the top of the stack again.

Has nobody been near them?

I believe the Yanmar V8 you refer to is a Toyota 4.5 litre engine from the Amazon V8 four wheel drive.

This engine would probably have hit the marine range 2007/08 just after boat sales fell off a cliff.

Its a diesel engine with a lot of torque.

The drive is I believe Yanmar's own design which came out about 2008 but I know little about it. They used to use Mercruiser outdrive legs which struggled with the torque of diesels.

I thought that Nanni Diesel used to marinise this 4.5 V8 and I think it was at the Southampton show a few years back but it does not appear in their current engine range only the old straight 6cyl 4.2l engine now.

You don't tend to see many of these large Yanmar diesel /outdrive packages in the UK, E P Barrus are main importer for the UK.

I reported here a couple of years back about the end of production of inline 6 Toyota 4.2 based marine engines from Nanni, Yanmar and Yamaha. At the time it appeared that Yanmar had exclusivity on the V8 4.5, for how long I have no clue. Nanni never had a look in.

In the US the damage to their reputation caused caused by the BMW BY debacle Yanmar have found slow take up 8LV however it is now starting to find customers. Yanmar is fast turning into a one trick pony, at the top end supply agreement with Scania is not being renewed, no Tier III replacement for LYA3 on the radar despite Tier II production in US ending and looks like the bigger brother CX is going the same way.

The poison pill of using automotive based engines which pass off road emissions margins with plenty to spare seems to be the way forward for Yanmar.

As to out drives I do not get them so can offer no comments.

Took a look at spec sheets.........8LV 370 Vs VP D6 370, both weigh about half a tonne bobtail, torque of D6 is greater.

Other than packaging length of 8LV which is better, you have nausea of twin turbochargers, not sure why anybody would go there unless price is very competitive, and that is coming from VP non believer!

Nanni's diesel is the old straight 6 4.2L but now with common rail.

Simply incorrect, Toyota engine used licence built Bosch VE right up to very end of production, never went common rail.

The common rail in line 6 motor Nanni sold for a while was the VM after Mercruiser dropped it.

Nanni spec sheets are scandalously incorrect 'The engine complies with the most stringent emission regulations in the world – EU-RCD, US-EPA and BSO.'

Yes engine meets RCD but EPA Tier II was squeaked by a timing retard until somebody shouted foul and Yanmar stopped selling the product in the US.

Remember the poster here who had catastrophic LP failure, eventually got a new engine out of Barrus. Nanni still selling new engines which are no longer in production. In a year or so some poor smuck will be saying I need a new engine cos old one has gone bang and I cannot get a new one.

Ho hum

I have a Yanmar 8lv with the matching sterndrive on a 9m aluminium powerboat (weight 4 tonnes) = replacing a 6Lp with mercruiser bravo 11
the 8lv has way better torque curve and things happen right from throttle on. The 6Lp required me to wait while the revs got up to 15000-18000 before any action started--- not a good thing when you are waiting to cross a dangerous bar.
The only problem I have had with the combo is the sterndrive.
On a weekend trip I lost forward gear. I could have come home backwards but the water wasnt kind enough so I had to get a tow.
Reason: A solenoid inside the stern drive had been over tightened at the factory so the tube that contained it fractured and lost hydraulic oil (that's what I was told by the mechanic- what it actually means is that I was out at sea and the gear failed.)
That's the only problem I've had in 184 hours. I'm ready to call that a one off and remain VERY happy with the motor------- but will report back if other issues arise.
The level of service I receive here in NZ is spectacular-- maybe just the dealer I use but absolutely no complaints there.
