Yanmar servicing and warranty

Do I need to have a dealer do the 50hr service on my new 3ym20 to maintain the warranty or can it be done by a marine engineer?

legally it has to be done by any competent person - but I would ask Barus for their interpretation of "competent", many years ago they weren't happy about me doing servicing on my yanmar and I am a qualified engineer and used to make diesel engines! but as they pointed out not their diesel engines.

I don't see how legally they could insist on it. Like cars as long as its done to schedule and genuine parts are used then the warranty should still be valid.

They do try to encourage you to have the initial service done by a main dealer. How much it matters is your guess - the warranty is only two years and the number that have failed during that period and did not have the initial service done by a main dealer is probably so small that there is no good evidence as to how they would react.

I must admit that I had the first 50 hour service carried out by a Yanmar dealer. I have always serviced engines myself but this was the first that was brand new.

I just thought it was safer wrt warranty issues. However, the dealer is my wife's godson so it didn't exactly break the bank.

I also got a load of Yanmar bits & pieces so that I could do later services myself using genuine parts for first couple of years.

Did the same. One additional reason reason for having the dealer do the first service was in case there had been any updates.
