Further to my post re my Yanmar 12hp horizontal. I've yet to find the engine number, but admit to having other things to do....like checking the clinker hull, and making sure the float bilge pump is working.

The engine is supposed to be reconditioned, and started first compression despite a frosty morning.

If the gearbox is 3 to 1 reduction on the YSE, I suspect this is a YSB/M as fairly sure prop is engine speed. From memory, prop is 8inch.

Where is the anode?

Which direction does the propshaft turn? (in forward of course)

Does anyone have a manual that they can tell me the basics from. If you have would you be prepared to scan a few important pages for me.

Thanks in advance.

Malc.

If the engine started that easy on a frosty morning there is definitely nothing wrong with it. The engine turns anti-clockwise as you look at it from the crank pulley end. The anode on both the Yanmars I had was on the top of the engine in the middle of the block beside a large lifting ring. This was a type of screw in plug which had a square head on it. Hope this helps.

Helps enormously thanks. May have a few more questions when I next visit. Must rest over the weekend.

Just in case anyone is interested, I have a website, mainly about my dogs, with Barney my Lurcher being my dog now, and the last few years of his adventures and achievments.

The boating pages are from my last couple of years.

Many thanks.

Many thanks Manos - it's a great help. I just want to see the layout etc, and oil drains etc. Saves a lot of time searching.

And Donald, many thanks for your offer of help. It really is appreciated.

On the back of the engine on top of the gearbox there should be a plate about 3inches by 2 inches it should say if its a YSE or B or M I beleive the YSB and M have a hand starting pully and chain arrangement whereby the YSE does not
There are a couple of sites you may want to look at

I've now looked at the YSE manual, and fairly sure it's not that model. The plate is either missing, or just painted over. Have to admit I've had other things to do or think about.

The sea-cock handle fouled the mounting block, so I've had to cut the end off the handle, and make sure it stopped the water. It has never needed to be used, as it's been in salt water on the south coast, so no chance of freezing.

I've also had to check the amount of leakage, make sure the float bilge is working, and if the planks don't swell to stop the leak in a few days, will have to find and stop it.

Also got my 18 Norman up for sale (see adverts particularly Boats and Outboards), so dealing with that as well.

I have pictures of both boats on my site http:www.angelfire.com/rnb/malcsworld/ or http://geocities.com/malcsworld/

Thanks for the links.

I reconditioned engines for a living for 4 years in the early 70s. The general condition, starting etc. all shows this engine has been reconditioned. I think the prop issue it the only thing I have to address. I believe it's running in reverse, no doubt because the original prop was used and the original propshaft ran clockwise.

Oil needs changing of course.

WHY people don't spend the few pounds, and hour or less to do this always amazes me. Surely it's better to spend £20 once a year (assuming you only do about 100 hours) than risk £1k to £2k on wrecking the engine.

Never mind, I can't understand most people anyway.

Thanks again, your help is really appreciated as it saves a lot of hassle finding out the hard way.

Yes John, I may well want to buy one. I have been promised a left hand (anticlockwise) prop by a boat club member. He's had it a long time, but thinks it is 15in. Depends on the taper etc. Can be machined of course but......

Until I look properly I have to assume the prop on my boat is the original, and I don't know the size etc.

If you look at the picture looking from behind you can see the prop if you lighten the photo. The boat is 8ft 6in beam, so can anyone estimate the size from the photo? Boat has 20ft keel.

I'll know better after my next visit in a day or two, but don't expect me to investigate under water until the spring <grin>.

Will your prop be adequate for a 1.5ton clinker with a 12hp. Tell me your price anyway, but I'm selling my 'perfect' 18 Norman at a loss, so I can continue boating.

My email malcsworld@ntlworld.com

Thanks

Malc.

the prop has a 12:1 taper for a 3/4 shaft and it was on a an 8 hp motor shoving a 28ft 3 tonne boat (Trapper 500) at up to 7 knots (hull speed), so i'd say that at 12 hp your over powered if your only 1.5 tons, and you need to check your prop clearance, you need about 8 ins from the centre of the shaft line to fit a 12 in prop (15% of diam from prop tip to hull is the clearance figure) so call that 2 ins + prop radius

15 in prop needs about 10 in
