Anyone with experience in having a rattly old Yannie 3GM gearbox rebuilt?

Any particular tips, advice, problems? I believe my mechanic is competent enough to do the job...

I had a 2gm gearbox re-built by Cellar Marine in Porthallow (Yanmar agents) . Took no more than a couple of hours even after the box had been ripped apart with force by incompetent Spanish mechanics (came back from Spain in my handbaggage!), and the box worked like a dream thereafter. Recommended - they know what they are doing and their costs are reasonable.

After my experience with the Spaniards, I wouldnt use someone who isnt familiar with the box.

Have a look yourself first. If any of the cogs are dammaged, find out how much they cost. Replacing knackered bearings is fairly straightforward and shouldn't be too expensive, but gearwheels will be, and it's a specialist job to repair them.

No experiece of stripping marine gearboxes but heard that with car ones you had to be carefull about only replacing one cog as the surface get work hardened and a new cog wears badly against the mating old (work hardened) cog. Never worked out whether this was a real problem in practice though!
