Hi,
I run a Yanmar 1gm in a 22' hull and find it very noisy. Can I add a watercooled silencer of some sort to help reduce the 'being followed by a dumper' racket she makes?? the only exhaust fitted currently is the watercooled loop directly attatched to the head.

Hi,

You could try something like a Vetus waterlock and/or muffler inserted in the exhaust line. Surprisingly (to me) adding the waterlock made a significant difference to the noise of engine, so much so that I didn't bother with the muffler as I'd intended. I of course, fitted the water lock to protect the engine from flooding, and the quietening effect was a welcome bonus.

Possibly adding a muffler would improve things even more. I assume you have already lined your engine compartment with a proper sound absorbing material.

Good sailing!

I used to have an YSB12 in my Cornish Crabber and reduced the noise considerably by adding an inlet air filter from an old car. The inlet on a single cylinder engine produces a lot of noise but this is not always recognized. Best thing is to sail of course.

hi,
Thanx for the good advice, the vetus waterlock is probably a must have item but I also liked the idea of an air filter, the noise of the intake had'nt occured to me and the benefit of clean air through a filter can do nothing but good. re. the sailing being best, where is all the wind this year (s/e coast)???
thanks again all, Gordon Inwood.

If you go on the Yanmar web site it has some detail on fitting the exhaust system. You can also post a question and get answers from other Yanmar-engine-owners if you go to the discussion page.
