yanmar exhaust elbow. beware!

Ordered mine from Ben on Fri 6th last week. Arrived today, nothing to pay on import, happy, happy, happy! :encouragement:

I got one delivered to our b&b in Pennsylvania recently on a US business trip. Overnight service from Ben (in Massachusets) .
Well made, good price so pleased with the outcome (3GM30 raw water)
More sensible than Yanmar, and it's a less conventional design to duplicate!

I've had the same problem- found the inner sleeve of the exhaust elbow on my 2GM jammed in the inlet of the silencer / water trap (removed latter while trying to access the stern gland to replace packing). Now replaced the elbow and found that all the exhaust hose wrong size ( decided to replace this as well), so new swan neck and silencer (thank god the skin fitting on the transom is the right, i.e. 45mm size) needed as well. Combination of Yanmar and Vetus pricing has turned a hopefully qick job into a big expense, especially now that I've noticed one of the engine bearer bolts has sheared through, so that's another 160 quid plus vat for at least one flexible mount and fitting/engine realignment. Oh well, part and parcel I suppose.
Still haven't got round to re-packing the stern gland..........

Had the same problem over the winter. See here..............http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?421692-3YM30-exhaust-elbow-gasket&highlight=

Change the elbow in any case. I had to and it is a common problem apparently for them to leak. I also had the heat exchanger removed and its mounting plate/surface skimmed and the studs renewed. Time will tell if that did the trick long-term.

Check that the drips have not affected the electrics below the exhaust elbow.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Good point about electrics. I came to the leak via the corrosion on the grounding points below the elbow.
Cheers.

I have been reading this post (and others) regarding the exhaust elbow for quite a while now and somehow become less and less confident that I don't need to check mine.

I have a Yanmar 3GM30 RAW water cooled. So All, should I be worried? The thing is, I'm off to the Sates in a month or so................

Thanks

Unless you have problems with seized bolts etc it takes 5 mins to take it off. 10 mins to clean up the mating faces. It'll cost you the price of a gasket so why not check it if it's been on a while.

There are at least 2 different styles of water inlet- some have external water injection via a hose -others have an injection point on the flange face -almost internally! As long as you know which one you need , Ben will be able to choose his correct assembly!
