Anyone able to tell me what size socket I need for the big nut on the end of the crank of my 3GM? (the pulley end, that is...)

Cheers!

Just measure it, its a metric size and the size across the flats IS the socket size.

Ah I get it, you are not near the boat, so use a shifter - knowing yanmar it isnt even tight.

Bad advice unless it really is not tight. Use the correct size socket or a ring spanner.

I undid the one on my 2GM20 - it was incredibly tight - luckily I was stripping the engine down and could lock the crank with a piece of wood jambed up the block, otherwise it would have been a sod. I tried to borrow a socket from our local boatyard - no chance, and a proper socket of that size was very expensive. I ended up buying a box spanner (36 - 41mm from memory) from Farnell, for around £7.50 and using a massive adjustable on the other end.
