Balking at the cost of a genuine GM air filter I decided to take things into my own hands.

I removed the old foam from the filter to leave the mesh innards.

Aquired some some foam air filter from amazon, prime in fact came in less than 18 hours!

Cut foam to size, glued with a little impact adhesive, and I have a new air filter, for £3.73

Might spend the savings on beer....

Seems like assuming the mesh holds out it could do this indefinitely.

Hope this saves you a few quid too!

I did the same for my 1GM10. The original Yanmar filter foam had disappeared and had obviously broken up and been ingested by the engine. I wasn't happy replacing it with such an inferior Yanmar product and used an Ebay foam that was sold for use on rally cars etc. I made 2 filters for £6, so a financial win as well.

Agree that the price of a piece of foam from Yanmar is OTT. If you obtain foam elsewhere please be aware that the Yanmar foam has be chosen primarily for its sound deadening, not filtration, properties. You will see that the GM range manual identifies the foam as Intake Silencer Element.
