Hi

Our Jeanneau has a Yanmar 4JH-4E 56hp diesel fitted....

Ever since it was new, I have religiously checked the oil, and for the first time, afer 35 hours running, I need to top up the oil....very good, you might say, but it has led to all sorts of intrigue which I am hoping you can help me solve (the Yanmar website can't, but I have oodles of faith in the YBW Forums!!)

You see...on opening the engine bay, I find not one, but two yellow-painted filler caps, and upon consultation with the Yanmar oracle (the Owners Manual for the engine!!) it refers to both of them interchangeably as oil-fillers!!!

Now on every engine I have ever had before, vehicle and boat, I would expect the engine oil-filler to be the one on top, and I am pretty sure that the one on the side is not the gearbox, since the gearbox is on the rear of the engine, so I am now in a dilemma about which 'ole to pour the'oil in!!

Anybody got any insider information that might help please?

Cheers

Nick

They are both filling points for the engine, on some installations you may not have access to one or other of them.

The yellow plug aft of the flywheel housing - the other end of the engine to that shown in your picture is the gearbox filler. Make sure you put the correct oil into each!

Thanks for that...I was pretty sure that was the answer, and I'd found the other yellow cap at the gearbox end...it was just the fact that the manual referred both of the ones I indicated in the pic, but in different chapters!!

Appreciate your help..

Nick, in my 2006 Benny the manual says that engine and gear oil is the same; of course this depends on the type of transmission: mine holds just half a liter of oil.

Also check wether ther is any SALT production in the engine room, be it on the floor of the pan OR over the engine rear. In many instances the SMALL pipe, leaving from the anti-siphon valve, is too short and just "showers" the engine. You can just add some tube lenght and have it finish inside a plastic half liter bottle, to be checked whenever You control the oil level.

Cheers
