Yanmar 3YM30 Oil Change

I have noticed that if I put the tube right to the bottom it restricts the flow of oil into the tube - effctively the tube seals against the bottom of the crank case. To get round this I pull the tube back a bit , get the oil out, then put the tube to the bottom for the last bit of oil - could this be your problem?

There are two Pela pumps. The cheaper one is a round ball with a pump on top. The more expensive is a long cylinder, with the pump on top. I first bought the round ball, and it was a lot of effort to remove the oil. I then bought the more expensive version, and it is easy to remove old oil.

Now all I need is for the engine manufacturers to recognise that oil filters need to be changed, and installing them horizontally means that old oil gets spilt down the side of the engine, whilst a vertical instalation can be removed without any mess.

Are there supposed to be any O rings on the pump valve. There appears to be a largish groove in the spigot on top and a large soft O ring sitting at the base of the spigot (Not in the groove) but the black cap just pushes the O ring out of the groove.I have tried some smaller O rings but same result Maybe its not supposed to be there. Looking at the cap there appear to be what may be two very thin O rings at the top and bottom inside. These may just be moulding marks. They are very hard and I don't want to try removing them in case they are part of the moulding. There don't appear to be any seals on the suction pipe connection at all. I can just about get it to hold some vacuum if I press down hard on both items (without the big O ring) but it looks pretty **** to me. Its a simple idea and could have been much better engineered at little extra cost. I am not really sure what the designers intent was. Maybe the black parts were softer when it was new but I have had it for around 10 years and it has never really worked very well despite the rave reviews. Some instructions would have been good! I have shortened the black suction hose which may help. Any other help appreciated.

Its the round one. I used to have two. I also had one with a pressure relief valve on the side which was even worse so I gave it away. I am tempted to say "typical American engineering" give me a cheap Chinese copy any day!

I think they do recognise it - but its our problem not thiers and the solutions are not easy - for example if make the engine higher and put it underneath this would be unacceptable - put the filter on a side plate which would make it wider or longer - also not acceptable. So how would you get it vertical without these drawbacks? Only thing I could think of is some sort of drain mechanism so you could drain the filter before removing it

A forumite told me a few days ago then he loosens the filter, then spikes it with a screwdriver & drains it into a receptical, before total removal of the filter

Phone ASAP Supplies. They can sell you a 90 degree adapter, or you can move the oil filter into a different place altogether with a remote kit.

Hello,

I have a 3YM20 and use to change my oil with a Pela pump that I borrowed. Last year I used my hand pump (bronze type) with a length of rubber hose that I attach to the bottom of the bronze hand pump and the top of the oil dipstick hole. The length of hose is secured with jubilee clips to make an air tight seal and it took alot less time that using the pela pump.

I'm down at my boat tomorrow if you want a photo.

I don't need a picture thanks but that sounds a much better idea. Did you get the impression that the dipstick tube went well down into the sump. Where did you get the pump from.

Another possibly obvious point about the small Pela - you have to insert the tube into the oil before pumping, otherwise there will be no vacuum.
