Yanmar 2GM20 full of salt water

sorry to hear all this...
isn't the cyl head at a condition that could be sold on e-bay?
also does the engine have the rpm sender on the flywheel side, that's over 100euro iirc
starter motor if in good working order could fetch another 100.
lift pump another one that could be sold.
alternator, etc...
I'd take it apart and keep what's salvageable and slowly put them in ebay, nothing to loose!

The only bit I am going to ask to get back is the nearly new SS exhaust elbow.

When I thought I needed a new raw water pump I found out they cost upwards of £350. I was able to rebuild instead, but maybe yours is worth keeping? And dead easy to whip off from the engine.

Aye, the raw water pump might be worth keeping.

Not easy selling spares from a boat in Portugal, but that and the elbow can B Ed stashed.

I wonder how many of the ancillaries are interchangeable between various Yanmars? Stash away your gearbox, elbow, alternator, water pump, heat exchanger... it's a wee help towards the Beta...

Must be so frustrating for you... things aren't exactly rosy back here anyway, you're not missing much!
If you're still there next year we'll give you a tow on our way South :)

It's very frustrating and expensive, but you are right, there is nothing back home right now except onrushing isolated covid-infested Winter.

.Well, the engine is brown bread, it is donald ducked, it is no more, it is an ex engine, it has fallen off its mounts, it is not pining for the fjords . . . . .

Comprehensively condemned as not worth rebuilding. Looking at the possibility of shoehorning a Beta16 into the space and selling my body down the docks in Lisbon to pay for it. Have put a kidney on Ebay.

Having rebuilt countless engines over the years, would be interested hearing what they've found to totally condemn it. Original fault sounded like a head gasket problem and comment about oil being blown out can be something as simple as stuck rings, which I had one time. As you didn't report any knocking, would appear bearings are OK.

The Beta 16 with TMC40 gearbox is dimensioned here.Yachts will often need the shallow sump to be specified.
I don't have a reliable dwg. of the 2GM20 but presumably you can measure the overall .There was no trouble in fitting the length of the Beta plus box.
If you are tempted by the Beta I suggest you read through the very detailed installation manual on the Beta marine pages-lot's of useful stuff, clearly stated.

You should note that the current freshwater Yanmar version is wider though than your current engine, due to the addition of the heat exchanger.
Both the Yanmar and the Beta require larger diameter hull inlet and exhaust than did the 2GM20.

I am currently swopping a Yanmar 2GM20 for a Beta 16. Couple of points.. The cross-over exhaust fitted to use the yanmar waterlock is bulkier on the back of the engine, and in this case, requires modding the enclosure. The exhaust diameter is a bit larger at 51mm v. 45mm. Sizing down is OK, so I wrapped the vetus box inlet with glass tape and resin, up to 51mm The flexijoint coupling supplied is not a direct bolt on to the Yanmar shaft flange. One can either re-drill the flange, or order the matching part, spec-ing your shaft diameter. I put the flange on the lathe, lightly marked the new PCD and carefully spaced out the holes. Bolts slid in.
In this case, the hull water inlet is the same diameter, a nominal 3/4", the Yanmar pump inlet was a bit smaller.
