Yanmar 2GM20 full of salt water

There's obviously a serious problem if enough water and gas (exhaust or compressed air) is getting into the sump to force the emulsified oil out of the dipstick, it sounds more than a simple head gasket, but it doesn't take long to whip the heads off and have a look. You're not going to lose anything by doing it. I doubt I'll be able to offer any practical help but moral support doesn't help and perhaps Vic 'll be round with some idea.

Not the exhaust elbow - I replaced that with a new stainless one.

Replacing with another 2GM20 is not an option as they are no longer produced.

Get the head off and check whats happened/damage and proceed from there. Check the conrods are ok with a straight edge across the top of the block, the pistons should come to the top. If just a head gasket, clean up everything, replace the gasket and get the boat to Bruces Yard in Faro. Then a long term solution can be contemplated. He might acually have an engine there off one of the boats that havent paid for years and he has now dismantled.

Most likely the most expensive marina in Portugal to be stuck in:( Have just spoken to Stu and agree with what I hear he's suggested, good luck.

Cascais is costing us €18.30 a night, could be worse. Our cylinder head is in a bucket somewhere, so nothing is happening immediately.

Still optimistic we will get this engine rebuilt quickly and affordably, will have a better idea tomorrow.

PS, take plenty of pics, write a good story and send it to PBO, £100 a page. Do a story then highlight the interesting pix with a description in squares

Just had an email from Bruces, no 2YGM20 s

Well, the engine was removed efficiently and rapidly from the boat this afternoon.

There will be a full report on Friday, at which point it will be finally decided if the rebuild is to go ahead. It will only go ahead if Joao (our engineer) is convinced the end result will be a reliable engine that is good for a couple of years anyway. I will then order the necessary parts from the UK. I have a price for Joao's time for the job, and IMO it is reasonable.

Even if we had the money for another engine there may be a problem. The guy who had this boat two owners ago moved the engine back 14", so space for anything other than the same engine could be problematical. The prop shaft is only a few inches long.

Will report further when we know more. Meanwhle, tomorrow I scrub out the filthy mess in the bilges and lash on the Danboline.

Well, the engine is brown bread, it is donald ducked, it is no more, it is an ex engine, it has fallen off its mounts, it is not pining for the fjords . . . . .

Comprehensively condemned as not worth rebuilding. Looking at the possibility of shoehorning a Beta16 into the space and selling my body down the docks in Lisbon to pay for it. Have put a kidney on Ebay.

(If anyone wants a cheap website this would be a good time to get in touch ;))

My beta 16 replaced a 2GM20 in the same compartment width with space for sound deadening and better placed access than the Yanmar. The only tricky access is to the back bolts on the heat exchanger.

I replaced my 2GMF with a 3YM20. Needed 17mm off shaft, aft mounts in same place, forward mounts moved forward slightly. (Beware 2GM is not same dimensions as 2GM20 - close but no banana).
Does this mean you don't want my gearbox?
