Yanmar 230HP engine

I haven't heard anything but positive comments on the 4 cylinder Yanmars. Spoke to a guy who had them (x 2) installed during a repower 3 years ago and does a lot of remote area boating. He has nothing but praise for what he describes as simple, non-complicated engines, that return good economy.

Good luck with the preposed acquisition.

Been to look at a boat today which has a Yanmar 230 4 cylinder diesel. Anyone familiar with this unit? Any info good or bad would be appreciated.

Can you tell us what make / model of boat, and what type of drive, shaft or outdrive?

Cheers, Allan

Yanmar

If it is one of own Yanmars 4LH models it will be a dream. Probably the best models Yanmar produce, surprisingly quiet smooth and gutsy.

BMW based Yanmar 4BY engine, just walk away 100% trouble.

I had 2x the 140hp version of this engine from 1991 to 1998 and they did not miss a beat, changed oil and filters every year and that was it, had yanmars ever since, this is basically the same engine uprated.

Yes, I've now found out the engine is a Yanmar 4LH STE. So this is the good un! Just a bit wary because the boat has been up for sale for some time and keep thinking there's something I'm missing. There again, I suppose there's a lot of boats that've been for sale for a while. Thanks all for the info, we wont be ready to change for a month or two but will let you know if we go for it!

Its a brilliant engine and if you cheat and quote flywheel hp as most others do its actually 240hp. I have had two of them in my 30foot Chap for over 7 years and with basic care they are unbelevably reliable. Mine are on Bravo ones and I woulnd not want to chage them for anything else. Just keep an eye on the engine anodes and they will not let you down. In the commercial applications they only need a service every 250 houres or once a year which ever comes first.
