I know this is a very long shot but can anyone suggest why my 10GM should sound its alarm after say 10 mins of running and yet not feel VERY hot? My boat is in Corfu and has a lot of growth on it and the engine has spent the past year unattended with the impeller still in the water pump but water is exiting the exhaust (how much should it be?). What should I investigate first (and second and third etc. ?) All help will be appreciated.

Well, the alarm could be:

not charging

low oil pressure

overheating

A very foul bottom, on any vessel, increases the load on the engine considerably and will tend to make the engine run hot. It is very likely that fouling will have partly obstructed the water intake. also.

So, you have a little engine working very hard and getting less water than usual.. result: overheating.

Try to clear the inlet seacock, then scrub her as soon as possible.

Clean (or replace) the alarm sender unit as it'll be covered in crud. This worked on mine.

(And the thermostat too).
