Oh Ruggger...
Having said on a previous thread that I'm persuaded by a Tohatsu ... I've found a used Yamaha 3.5 air-cooled for a decent price. Anyone got one/had one of these?
I'm a bit concerned about the air cooling bit. Sounds a good idea...but if it's so good why aren't the other makers doing it?
Comments, as ever, very welcomed.
Thanks

Yes, I have one. Had it for about 12 years. Bought it second-hand so itr must be over 20 now. It didn't run too well until I cleaned the carb out, there's a clear plastic bowl on the left side under the covers that you should empty regularly, it catched the rubbish from the fuel tank. We use the ours to push our little dory the half mile to and from the mooring. It's given us great service. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Air cooled tend to be a bit noisier than their water cooled counterparts, having said that you have no worries of blocked waterways in the engine and with a little sound insulation under the "hood" you can quieten the aircooled ones down a bit.

I had a 5bs same as Nigels for years.Air cooled never gave any trouble.(Seriously loud though)It stood unused in my shed for years so I sold it on boats and outboards site.

Dusted it off and it Started on the second pull and ticked over nicely.

Small point is that even though aircooled you shouldnt run the m dry as the end of the exhaust is cooled by immersion in water.
