Yamaha outboard problem after it had been on seabed for 24hrs.

Hi guy's, I have a 2002 Yamaha 8hp 4stroke outboard (F8CMH) which was submerged for 24hrs after dingy sank.
I've flushed out the fuel system & changed oils, plugs etc.

The engine starts no problem but when I try to give it revs it's fine for around 20-30 seconds then it starts getting very rough,engine shakes & the emergency warning light starts to flicker dim & sometimes bright.
When I started it at first after flushing the light was on constantly but the more I start it the less bright the light gets.

The light is still flickering & it idles fine until I give it revs.

Solid state ignition system? Washed it with clean fresh water? Cleaned carb with proprietary carb cleaner? They'd be my first ideas.

If its been under tidal water you can bet that sand /mud is in the main and big end bearings . Unless a complete strip down is done the engine wont last but a few hours . Sad but true seek the advice of a qualified outboard engineer . Can you seek compensation from your insurance ??

I'd agree. We stripped a Mariner 25 that had been under flood water on Ullswater (for quite some time). The engine was packed with silt, and straw. Absolutely amazing how much debris was in there.

Give it a good clean, spray everything with WD40 or Duck oil, clean the carb well and get it running then put it on Ebay and get rid of it. - Sold as seen - running!

Hi, thanks for quick replies. The engine was drained of oil & fuel & put into a tank of fresh water for a few hrs after the divers brought her up.
It was lying on hard ground sitting on the hull with engine still on tilt so mud & silt shouldn't be a problem.
I'm hoping it's just a problem with damp electrics & have taken off the coil etc to dry off in doors.
Found a few tests to be done with digital tester so I'll do that when things get dry.

Yea I appreciate what your saying, I'm on west coast of scotland where the ground is hard & has very little water bourne silt & mud particals compared to Cornwall.

I suppose time will tell after a season of running as the engine gets used every day.

Replaced oil pressure switch & she runs a treat! Thanks. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The shafts too long for the new pioneer 13 so looks as if she'll be getting sold soon.
