Hi all,
Recently I bought a Yamaha Malta 2 stroke shortshaft from 1999, but the previous owner didn't take good care of the engine.
He painted the tail black, so that the water inlet was completely covered in paint along with the screws on the bottom of the tail that give access to the gearbox oil. Also, he painted the propellor white to give it a 'new' look.
When i first started the engine, it was not running well. No water was coming from the tell tale at all. The impeller was completely gone, so i replaced it with a brand new one.
Also, i gave the carburetor a good clean. But when i started the engine again, the gas cable fell apart... Major disadvantage!
So i replaced that one as well with a brand new Yamaha gas cable (they are quite pricey).
When I tested the engine again, i discovered that from roughly 3/4 WOT to WOT (in forward gear), the engine seems to go in neutral gear. I searched for answers on the internet and figured that most probably the bushing inside the propellor was gone. So i replaced the propellor with a good second hand propellor, hopefully this will work.
All and all, this engine is costing me a lot of unforeseen money... (and is giving me a lot of headache, but I want to get this motor up and running again)
These problems aside, there is still one (hopefully!) thing that needs fixing: The tiller arm of the engine keeps loosening when in use (because of the vibration I reckon). When i tighten the bolt again, it keeps getting loose.
Is anybody familiar with this problem? How do I prevent this from happening?
Many thanks in advance!
