Hi,

Wonder if there is anyone out there who can help me with a
Yamaha Hydra Drive fault. This is the problem, it is going in and out of drive when under way, the engine revs stay the same and there isnt any nasty noises.
Any help would be greatfully received. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

On the side of the engine, there is a plastic plate where the gearchange cable from the leg meets the cable from the gearlever at the helm. There is slot where the neutral point can be set, but you will need the Yamaha specifications to set this measurement, anyway, if this locknut has moved or the cables become slack it might lead to your symptoms. Now the bad news, it may be related to water in the lub oil, or a choked oil strainer in the leg itself. In there can get very expensive....
A very remote possibility is damage to the rubber coupling between the flywheel and the outdrive input shaft, but I've never seen one break there...yet!

Thank you for that,
I think the gear cables are ok, the oil should be ok it was bought from French Marine and has only been in the water for 1 year.
North Up would you say this could happen if I have lost oil
due to the clutch plates, I am thinking maybe a seal has gone and the leg oil is low.

As others have said, oil or oil pump is most likely.
If there is more than 100 hours / 6 months running on the leg, its due a change of oil anyway.
You will not lose oil 'due' to the clutch plates, but a lack of or contaminated oil will result in lower oil pressure, causing the clutches to slip- which sounds like your symptoms.
There is a cleanable oil filter/ strainer on the top of the leg which may be choked, and on one occasion I found the pressure relief valve to be jammed up with swarf, holding it partly open. On that occasion the leg woud engage when cold, but lose drive consistently after half a mile.
These outdrives are excellent when new, but become very troublesome and expensive after a few years, depending on the hours and type of use.
Good luck...

Rob,
I think he is waiting for the fishing to get better,
I know he is busy working on other boats and is looking forward to spending some time on it.
Not sure about the fishing tho!!!!!!
