Hi All

I am thinking of getting a Yamaha 8hp 2 stroke outboard does anyone have one and what do you think to them

I currently have a 5hp 2 stroke Yamaha outboard and this is a really great motor but I am after something with a bit more punch to try and get myself and swmbo up on the plane, is the 8hp much better

If so I will sell the 5hp on ebay and buy an 8hp

cheers shawn

leave the swimbo on the boat, and the 5 will get u on the plane
A rather useless reply Sir
You don't have all the facts, in fact, it could be that Mrs lanerboy suitably positioned, might aid said vessel to fly
Therefore a saving might be made
This Post is useless without pictures
By the way!
:D

I presume you are planning to use this with an inflatable tender? If so 8 hp is also unlikely to get you on the plane, but with you solo will go like the clappers. At least mine does. Great fun, raced a car back from Penmon to Beaumarris. It was a close run and I was dealing with a bit of chop too. Mind you, anything but a solid fibreglass bench seat highly recommended

Used to have a yamaha 15 and that went well, changing from a 5 to an 8 h/p motor can't see there being a great difference , but depends what you want to do with it, might as well go to the biggest that your outfit will take, we currently have a forty yam now, had the wing things bolted on last engine, seemed to pop out the hole ok, going to fit them to the forty,

8hp has twin cylinder engine so miles better than single cylinder jobbies. Best bet is to try to get a 9.9hp version which is easy peasy to make 15hp and that flies, I know as I've got one on a Avon 280. Cracking engines and soooo much better than 4 strokes but do like a drink.

I have a 5 hp Johnson 2T that has had jets replaced to make it into a 6hp! It easily gets our Achilles inflatable on the plane with 23 stone in the boat!

I have also tried a 9.8 hp Tohatsu which on a single one up run was giving 18 knots on our HH GPS.

I declined to do a repeat run for fear of running out of clean underwear!

I suspect that with the right prop and WOT! in excess of 20 knots could be achieved.

I had one with a lightweight 2.6m RIB, the type with the single skin and folding transom that packs away in a bag.

It would plane easily with just me, but with two adults in needed a bit of leaning over the front to help it onto the plane.

It's a great engine if you're sure 8 hp is enough.

I rented one last week. Yep great engine. Easy starter. I think the tohatsu 9.8 is minimum shawn should get, and 15 hp version better still

Agreed. The attractive thing about the Tohatsu is power-to-weight (26kg!) - but in absolute terms it just doesn't have enough grunt for effortless planing.

Just to add my 2p worth !
I had a honwave 2.7 air deck and and yam 8 2stroke and it would plane easy with 2 adults 2 small dogs and a toddler !
But wanted more as to keep up with friends with 15's !
I now have a yam 15 on a ribeye 310 with centre console and hole different thing !
But yam 15 2strokes are now getting very hard to find & the ones you can are bringing strong money, along with any 2stroke 15's due to power to weight & the demand to keep weight down on tenders / davits

I've got one of those, awesome little outboard, absolutely flies on my 2.7m tender.

Oh dear, I'm always being reminded that I've got a number of outboards stashed in my garage, including a Tohatsu 9.8, and was recently persuaded to part with Yam 8, which imho is a great little engine. I did have the Tohatsu on my Avon 2.8 for a while but changed to a Yam 15 2 stroke which has been faultless for many years, and goes extremely well. I would not want to change it for any other engine on that size boat (even though the Avon is only rated for a 10hp), the 15 seems a perfect match for it.

I have a Yam 15 that is/was on an Avon 310 with a centre console and it does a great job. Thing is that I was sold a pup with the rib and it is now in need of replacement. Thinking of a Highfield CL340 but without the console due to weight issues on the davits. I am loathe to get rid of the Yam so the question is can you add a tiller to convert from wheel steering?

The Yam 8hp 2 stroke flies on my little 2.7 metre RIB. It's a sweet & reliable engine, but the waterways tend to get crudded up with sand / salt. I generally flush with fresh water after using, but the problem still persists, and every now & then I have to open it up and properly clean it out.

I've heard this too from other Yam owners.

A 15hp would be great, except for the weight. From memory they're 36Kgs whereas the 8hp is 27Kgs. Just too heavy to lift on / off, especially if there's a bit of a chop.

Both 8hp & 15hp 2 strokes are becoming hard to find, and hence values are holding up well.
