Hi all, could anyone explain why the following could be happening. I recently bought a 17 foot Boston Whaler Montauk with a 70hp 4 stroke Yamaha outboard. The outboard is in fine condition with low hours and starts and performs perfectly until the other day when I took the kids fishing and idled. We idled for about 45 minutes with the forward gear just engaged from neutral and when we went to accelerate away she died out and wouldn’t start for about 30 minutes but then started up fine and ran well. I can’t find the reason for this anywhere and worry I’ve damaged the engine. I spoke to my outboard engineer and he said that this sort of engine isn’t designed for very low speed idling along. Could anyone please shed light on what could of happened. I’ve got a Honda auxiliary which I’ll use from now on for such things but would like to know as worried. Thank you for your help. J.

You dont say what your power Honda engine is but for trolling you only need a very low power

Consider an electric trolling motor, if only for the near silent operation

Did you ask the engineer what he thinks happens when the engine idles in gear for an extended period?

The only thing I can think of is that the plugs fuel/oil/carbon up due to over-rich running which might then result engine which might be hesitant to run tricky to start for a while. I'm sure that you cannot have done any damage but I would be inclined to removed the plugs and either clean them up or replace them. Probably only £20 for the lot.

Hi there, I bought a 2.3hp which should do the trick. Maybe a little noisy but I will be in the dog house if I buy a new electric motor. Thank you for your response. J.
