I think it was due to impeller fragments getting into places they shouldn't. It's a very economical little motor. Even running it with the fuel cock shut prior to putting in the car, takes ages. (It probably ran fine as this time, I had plug socket, 10mm socket and temp gauge with me in the boat....)
