After much argument, what is a ship and what is a boat, authority has decided, if you can move it by oar, it is a boat, otherwise it is a ship (yacht), but I always say I have a boat, because yacht has something snobish about it.

Well I live in Africa, and to say black or white or coloured is totally normal. We would have problems to describe a person with out that. When you refer to a blond woman, do you also say " a woman with a pigment definciency in her hair"?.

That is all BS, we are all Africans, some have been baked longer than others, that is all.

At the same time, an Anthropologist will refer to a white person "caucasian" and to a black person "negroid" for instance.

If in Cape Town I was to call a Cape Coloured a "Black Person" I would get a smack up side the head.

Black is black, Chinese is Chinese, White is Pinkish, Who cares, we all bleed the same red stuff, most of us have two of most things. A PC is a personal computer. A person who sails a boat is a sailor, a person who rides a motorbike is a biker.

Political Corectness is what is wrong with the world today.

Joe,
Sorry for the delay in replying to your suggestion, but I have been over the water for the evening enjoying some English hospitality.
I will need to consider your idea that I should change my Username to something more PC. We haven't worried about that sort of thing much in the Duchy so it might take me a little while to sort something out.
Maybe I will stick with what I've got to strike a blow for Cornish independence. Have a good weekend holiday,

What about Amen, going to change to Awoman? then there is Jock (Scotsman), Paddy (Irishman), Dai (Welshman), Yank (American), Polack (Polish) ..... going to ban the usage of those words? Simple, if you don't like what you hear, don't listen, walk away.

I lived in Africa for several years and then terms black, coloured, white were the only terms suitable to discribe the population. Ask a coon what colour he is and he will say "Black" - Jeez there is one I hadn't thought off for a while - coon.

Before anyone starts on me for being racist I admit I am but not colour based so maybe I should be referred to as nationalist but that is another story.

There was a time only about a generation ago when women stayed at home and reared the children, and had relaxing life while their husbands worked themselves into an early grave leaving lots of wealthy widdows. So the language was really more correct then than it is now. But now some fool has decided that women are unfulfilled if they do not go out and work, so we are now also suffering from the stress of a working life with a consequently reduced lifespan. So, we have doctors and lady doctors, dentists and lady dentists, lady bus drivers, and so on. There is no diminution of the lady's status because she is a woman. Ellen MacArthur is a yachtswoman, a term nobody would find a problem with. I consider myself a yachtswoman too; just not as clever as Ellen. But as a trained psychotherapist (yes I have a masters in that too), I am sure that most women are far too grounded to get upset about it. Nurses are usually women, and no-one seems to complain about the term 'male nurses'. So how about letting the dust settle and we will all call lady sailors what ever we feel most comfortable with?

Hi Mudhook. Actually I don't think I was having a "bad day". Neither did the post make it one. My point is, that it's another case of looking for a solution where there is not a problem! No one (well not who I know), assumes that yachting is a male domain. But neither do I know any women who feel that the generic term needs to be changed. Providing girls are bought up with the freedom of choice, (which they most definitely are), then what's in a name? I refer to my boat as "she" - no need to change that? So my point is that we shouldn't get "too excited" about seeking PC perfection.

Well put Becky. Naturally both you and Ellen are Yachtswomen. (And I'm sure you are as clever but we choose our path), creep creep! But as a generic term I would choose "Boater" or "Yottie", over changing our language when we aren't sure what we should say anymore! Like you say, whatever's comfortable.
