2 yachts grounded Sat afternoon
Anyone know what happened?

Be interested to know.

My mate used to keep his boat on a mooring at that spot. Not significant tides as I recall.

Perhaps they picked up a lobster pot thinking it was a mooring buoy!

I passed these 2 boats yesterday, one of them was called Quest (not sure if it was a "3" after the name), was wondering if it was Gerry Hughes boat from the documentary a few weeks ago. Don't know what happened but hope everything was ok when the tide returned.

Perhaps they were following one another. I have seen this happen at Toward Point, two boats on the rocks, one after the other.

anchor drag seems the most likely.

That was my thoughts but as far as I know what little wind there was was from was from the east so would have expected to see them on the other side of the Kyle. Tighnabruaich lifeboat was there in the afternoon I suppose someone will know what happened.

Well I guess no one knows or wants to say. Any chance they ran into each other are were grounded to avoid sinking?

maybe they were sharing a mooring at the Colintraive Hotel, had a heavy night thinking they were safe, and the line they were both sharing broke in the middle of the night letting them gently drift ashore.

I guess we don't really know, next theory please

No idea if this was the cause, but that day they went aground there was a strong wind at Colintraive, well the east kyle, could hardly stand for a while in it.
Yet for some reason there was no sign of it at Ormidale.

We passed these yachts (aground) probably around 1/2pm in virtually no wind, conditions had been similar from earlier that day although there was more of a breeze later towards Gourock. What rough time were the strong winds you witnessed at Colintraive?

I'm surprised we haven't learned what happened as yet, would be interesting to know. I was thinking that maybe one yacht was towing the other and they also lost power, wouldn't take long in this area to get into trouble with the strong current.

I got to Colintraive shortly after the boats were refloated.
They may have been part of a muster as most of the hotel moorings were doubled-up.
The talk of the steamie (hotel) was one of them had engine failure and the second got into trouble when it went in to attempt a tow. This from one of the Calmac crew.
Tinny lifeboat got them off at high water and took them to mooirngs.
One of them was eventually towed South by a workboat on the Monday.
