Can anyone suggest good Yachtmaster theory evening course for this winter 2014. South coast - Southampton preferably.

Also looking to buy Parker 31 if anyone knows of one for sale.

Will you consider an online course? I can recommend http://www.navathome.com/coastal_theory_courses.aspx - I have done Offshore and Ocean courses and exams with them and was very happy with the courses and support provided.

Depends where you are based in Southampton, but I did my Yachtmaster theory at night classes run at Brookfield School, Sarisbury.......Bernie was the instructor, and very good he was too.....as even I passed!!

Opinions may differ...

For me they worked wonderfully as it fitted in to my hetic life. Well impressed with my provider

But did you learn as much?
IMO, you only learn the bare basics & since sailing is a leisure interest for most, there is much to gain from interaction with others, both instructor + pupils, since you will also share their experiences.

Indeed, the extra knowledge gained is invaluable and makes the course worthwhile rather than just a tick box paper excercise

Who knows, as it is not measurable. I do the interaction stuff with people on the water and to be honest the sea is the real teacher.

I learnt what I needed in order to pass the theory exam; the material was presented in an easy to digest way and the interaction with the instructors was good and usually within six hours.

Distance Learning does not suit all as we have different ways of learning, but as the theory is a set of guidelines it worked for me.

Hamble School of Yachting at Mercury Marina?

Have done a couple of courses with them over the years and have always been ok. Didn't do YM theory with them though so usual caveats !!

Join Royal Southampton Yacht Club. Very easy to join and is a very friendly club. Talk to Maggie in the office and she will help you out.

Yachtmaster starts 26th October and runs over 6 Sundays.

Courses are at the Ocean Village club house. Work and SWIMBO permitting, I will be on the course - don't know if that is a motivator or de-motivator!!

You will also make a few friends around the club etc.

I was thinking of doing one with Storm Force in Southampton. Don't really know much about them, except that I regularly see them letting off lots of flares in our yard as part of their courses. Seems like good hands-on stuff (probably not Yachtmaster Shorebased, though :) ).

I did the ISAF Offshore Safety Crew Course weekend with Stormforce about a month ago although I only go cruising.. The Sea Survival course on the first day of the weekend was excellent with Alex a coxswain on one of the RNLI Inshore life boats. There were 8 of us I think with a good range of experience. The pool session was really tough for me. We all let off flares in the car park in the afternoon. On the next day there was only me so that wasn't so stimulating. The instructor was excellent and very experienced and full marks to Stormforce for running the course with only 1 student. I'm thinking of doing other courses with them next year.

Thankyou to all of the helpful replies to the Yachtmaster query. Lots of good choices.

Now all I need is a Parker 31.

Saw the U.K one, the one in Greece has good specs. I had heard there is one for sale in Kent.
