Yachtmail Chandlery - Lymington closed down

The fact of the matter is that so many now shop online ... and the 'bricks and mortar' shops cannot compete for long.

Its same story with Model Shops .... RC Models have long ago left shops with a few trying to hang on ...

When we started cruising in 1972 they were one of the very few outlets selling at a discount. I used to visit their place in Ladbrooke Grove and one of my purchases was an Avon Redcrest at a good price. Their shop had a small frontage and inside was a complete mess, piled high with cardboard boxes. The chap running it was there in a brown overall and a string quartet was playing from the radio. As you say, it was based on mail order. I think they had a sideline in selling model planes, or maybe it was model boats.

Saddened to hear Yachtmail in Lymington ceased trading last week. Another victim of the internet I guess? I try to support local businesses as far as possible (Force 4 Port Hamble for me).

I see they were established in 1966. They managed 60 years which is a big achievement, shame they are no more.

The shop was quite a landmark for me as an infrequent vistor to Lymington, right near the quay. Sad to see it go.
