Yachting World Forum

not sure. There might be a need for a forum dedicated to boats and gear that predate the invention of electricity, maybe?

Anyway, tell us about your heliport. Does that mean you have more than one helipad on the boat? Must be a bit useless having just one cos if your mate also had a boat with a helicopter he couldn't pop in. I've actually got three helicopters on board at the moment, but they're er still in boxes from the toyshop...

It is possible that the likes of Mr Abramovitch ;as an example, might like to join in forum debates but might feel out of it so to speak, there must be all sorts of questions related to heliports that these existing forums dont touch on.

now, actually, you have touched on an interesting point. Fact is that owners of large boats don't much talk to owners of other large boats. Or not to the same extent with clubs ad social gatherings etc like owners of "normal" sized boats. I think this is for several reasons. First, of course - there aren't thousands and thousand of such boats. Also, the sheer size means that if your boat is 100metres long, there aren't fifty other boats like it in the marina with whom you can have a chat. Further, the boats are physically so massive so the way that ordinary boaty people get to know one another - walk past on the pontoon, nod a few times, step in to help and get talking - that doesn't hapen much either - if you're on your superyacht you are at least 20metres from the next guy along - that's like trying to get chatting with someone across the street. Finally of course, your superyachty owner has stacks and stacks of cash, and this means that he has the very finest helicopter on the aft deck all spanking new and working perfick - and not one that he is trying to fix up in his spare time and nipping up to the helicopter spares shop or logging in to helicopter-fixing forums about where to buy secondhand rotors etc etc - and he also has lots of crew who organise the maintenance and buy lots of sugar so again, no need to go next door to borrow some. And hence no need for superyacht forums, not much. Also quite a lot of it might be in Russian...

Helipads, that the least of their worries. What about their tender yacht / tender power boat hoists, internal (side or stern) dock / berth / bay management and not forgetting that old chestnut integrating GPS, Radar, Chartplotter, AIS and missile avoidance system, while still being able to recieve Navtex. Phew - who has solved that one yet. I ask you!

Gawd if they could just have some where to discuss. I am sure they could save a few bob.

I was on a swanky boat with some busted/not quite working complicated hoist summink and was about to help look at it and a crew chap volunteered that he could sort it out. Ooh. I stood back ready for him to twiddle the knobs or rewire it or whatever magic was needed. Then he ... got out his mobile phone and called a local specialist! This is how superyachts get maintained - the only tools needed being a mobile phone and a large pile of cash.

Helidecks

Pedantic I know, but they're helidecks not heliports.

I just have the two, an aft helideck and a bow helideck so I can get from one end of my vessel to the other nice and quick.

Yes, a super boat forum would be of great help to me. I'm currently converting my 20' day sailer into a Super Yacht and I could benefit from the experience of other Super Yacht owners.
My plan is to add a striped canvas awning over the aft cockpit area and I'd really like a helideck (see, I'm learining already) back there as well. I need some pointers as to construction techniques, loads and which way round the big H goes - for and aft or athwartships? Without the right forum how am I supposed to get these things right?
Here's how the project looks so far:

I know I'm getting there because a chap walked past the other day and said: "Super yacht". He looked like he knew his stuff.

Are people with heliports on their aft deck catered for ,is there a need for another forum?

Yes but one would not communicate on the forum ones self, one would have a Phillipino do it for one.

Always makes me laugh when you see one of the 'guests' from one of these super yachts coming ashore in the South of France, crew of two driving the RIB and there is the passenger all blinged up just like they walked out of H A RRods! Cant imagine they are taking the gash ashore or popping down the chandlers to get a new joker valve for the bog!

Oh I'm so glad you asked John...

The "H" should be athwartships as, by convention, the horizontal bar of the "H" denotes the middle of the approach arc.

:0)

I was out sailing yesterday with my old mate, "Chopper" John. He has described in graphic detail the difficulties of landing on a largish motor yacht (Leander, I think) during Cowes week. Very small target, gusty winds down the Medina, and everyone watching! Good company once down for the night though.

Hi,Newby here. The heli landed badly on the deck and took out the sauna and I am afraid reduced the Riva to match wood, any body in Ibiza know of a reliable boatbuilder.Clive(Sir)
