Yachting myth busters

Although 'Friendly local yacht club' is a sailing myth, too.

Not always. I have been in some where nobody even spoke to us but I know several where the welcome is just what anyone would have wanted. Slightly off topic, the Camping and Caravanning Club advertises itself as 'The Friendly Club' but our experience is that in many cases it could hardly be more insular and unwelcoming.

The people on the visitors pontoon up the River Yealm are always welcoming and invite you to come alongside.

Going to sea in boats teaches humility and tolerance. (As can be seen, for instance, in the YBW Lounge.)

+1 Arguably the most skilled/experienced sailors in our club. (a very friendly club I hope) are the ones who " do not suffer fools gladly"
Now that term has always fascinated me. It speaks of arrogance and lack of patience and ability to teach or manage crew less skilled than themselves. As has been proven by their inability to get crew for racing. (to be able to suffer and cope with fools (inexperienced crew ) on a boat is a definite plus to me)
On the other hand one new member has the beard of sailor. Just no doubt about it when you see him. But so far has proven to be the least sklilled skipper in the club. Ho hum.

After moving house to another area I went to the local Yacht Club with a view to joining.
When I was asked what sort of boat I had (A classic French 10 knots 21ft Cabin Cruiser) I replied a Power Boat.
Reply "We don't like power boats here"

There is a myth that states that anti-freeze stops working when it is 367 days old. I have just taken some very insipid looking, 7 year old coolant from my VP and it has refused to freeze at -22 in my freezer.

Fred drift, but the reason it is recommended to change antifreeze is the corrosion inhibitors therein are gradually consumed. Assuming no overheating and boiling off, the concentration of glycol in your coolent won't change with time, and therefore the freezing point won't change.

Fitting out is normally a single weekend's work, made easier by the willing band of jolly volunteers who are always ready to muck in with the preparation of the hull for its annual coating of economically priced anti fouling.

You would get the same response from our club. "It is a sailing club" which by the way things are going is another myth
