Hi Forum,

I'm looking for information/advice about joining a good Yachting club in the Solent - my interests are cruising, racing and the social calendar.

Also looking for sailing opportunities in the weekends - please see post in "Wanted".

Best regards,
Jacob

I suppose a lot depends on what sort of boat you want to keep there and what kind of money you are prepared to pay. Most small clubs have rules governing hull types, LOA etc. If your boat can take the ground, very cheap moorings can be found. How far do you want to travel?

I currently don't have my own boat so I was looking for a sailing club which provides/facilitates sailing opportunities - sorry, I should have been more precise in my email.

jacob

Hi Jacob,

I am a member of Warsash Sailing Club and can recommend the club for all the reasons that you list, but I am obviously biased. Have a look at their web site at www.warsashsc.org.uk
A useful link is www.scra.org.uk where you will find details of solent regattas and a list of Solent clubs.

Regards,

Martin

Not flogging our own club too much, but our membership fees are very reasonable, cheap moorings for boats that can take the ground, good cruiser and dingy racing and a social calender. It's a very friendly 'working man's' club situated in Langstone Harbour, just off the A27.

Try www.tudorsailing.org.uk.

Hi - thanks for the response - I had a look at your website and the location ... looks really good!

Do you know how the culture/procedures are for crewing in the weekends? I was hoping that I could find a club where I could go cruising and/or racing in the weeknds without having to bring own boat ;-)

thanks again - much appreciated

regards,
Jacob

As with most smaller clubs, i think you will just have to get your face around, prop up the bar, and you'll soon find someone willing to take you out. There are often adverts on the club board for 'crew required' and 'crew offered' so there must be a market for it. There is also the Portsmouth Outdoor Centre next door where you can pick up any RYA qualifications you want and at least from my experience, they are reasonably priced. It won't be long though before you are hooked and want a boat of your own. I suspect everyone else on this board will second that
