Hi, I'm going yachting at the Cycalds, if you have been there, please write me some tips and tricks about yachting in this part of Greece...You know, something like where to go there, what are the marines like, good restaurants...

Hi. There are not that many marinas unless you visit the larger islands. If you want somewhere quiet visit Ayios Ioannis on east coast of Kithnos, you can drop the bow anchor and tie stern to a tree swim in blue sea with no other visitors in the bay. Visit Ios and get the ferry to Santorini. Don't go to Amorgos nothing to see except very very big waves in any sort of a blow. Siros is also worth a visit. Have a good time /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hardly any Marinas - lots of anchorages and quays you can go stern to mostly using your anchor - few have laid lines. Avoid July and August - too much wind,May and June are better.Take care if you go to Mykonos - can be very windy and always across when you are berthing.Good luck.

Hi!
It all depends on the available time, the departure/arrival places, type of yacht, experience and of course personal preferences.
Assuming that you take delivery of a sailing yacht from Lavrion (closest charter base to the Athens International Airport and closest port to the Cyclades from the Athens area), that you have a couple of weeks to spend, the yacht is a sailing yacht around 42 ft, and you do have adequate sailing experience or you do hire a skipper then:
Get a copy of the Greek Waters Pilot by Rod Haikel (Imray).
You will not find any large marinas. If you still want to try one, then go to Foinikas at the South - Western part of Syros. Otherwise it will be mostly stern to mooring on a quay. Tip: Use almost all the anchor chain you've got.
Food: Depends on the budget. If you are inclined to try small tavernas, trust the "Rough Guide to Greece", if on the other hand you want (expensive) delicacies buy at the Athens airport newsstand the "Alpha Guide". Best lobster spaghetti around the Cyclades (personal oppinion): At the port of Schoinousa the tavern to your left (looking towards the island...).
If you want to explore the islands as well, then try the villages (Chora) of Folegandros, Serifos and Amorgos.
Best swimming: Koufinissia, Schoinousa, Milos, Antiparos, Mykonos in that order.
About the best route to follow: Well it depends on the weather. If you start with a strong meltemi, follow an anti-clockwise route around the Cyclades and allow more time for the return miles.
As about the weather, check in this forum message number #796918.
Have fun!

Although there are no marinas, you'll find yachting facilities (power, water etc) at a few places. Try Loutra on the north-east coast of Kythnos - they have a 'winter yacht haven' that now finally has facilities.
Naxos has good facilities and is a beautiful island. The biggest in the Cyclades and my personal favourite.
There's a marina in Ermoupolis in Syros which isn't open due to local politics but you can tie up there and its much safer than the town quay or any of the ports on the west.
In October you may get storms & strong winds off the lee shore of the islands. Big uncomfortable seas are also possible. We always allow 1 day a week for being stormbound so if you have to return the yacht to base bear that in mind.
