Yacht surveyor Dublin area

We flew Michael (Alpha Surveys - local to you in Devon) out to Ireland to do our survey
Thanks, but I wasn't planning to go down the expensive route - that'd be a night in a hotel as well as the flights. (I had thought of it, but if I did that I'd be asking Oli Byles to do it.)

I have the contact details for Vincent Duke and Frank Jackson, thank you. Any further comments on these two, or others, much appreciated.

Both Michael and Oli are good, I am sure you would get value for money even with expenses, from either of them.

Understood, but I don't do 'expensive' !?!
If I use a Devon-based surveyor the survey would cost me the fee plus a return flight to Dublin, plus two nights in a hotel* plus meals. If I use an Irish surveyor who has recognised qualifications supported by recommendations I pay a fee. I'm buying a fairly old 30-footer which I've looked over as best I can afloat and now need somebody competent to look at the bits I can't (water penetration of the balsa core, for example) and to provide a report that will be acceptable to the insurers. If I was paying £50k or more it might be a different matter.

* The flight timings from Exeter get you to Dun Laoghaire too late to do any work on arrival, and need you back at the airport too early to have done anything useful in the morning. I know - I've just done exactly that to look at the boat before making an offer.

If I use a Devon-based surveyor ........

Andy,
Sorry, my comment wasn't intended to be a challenge, it was genuine - I must have struck lucky at the time with flight timings and cost.
As I said - good luck with the purchase. I bought the boat surveyed in Ireland and had a great trip sailing her back.
Cheers
Bob

Sorry - any bristling was accidental - I just meant to give an explanation. I think FlyBe changed their Exeter-Dublin schedules. If I remember correctly it used to be the returning Channel Islands flight going on to Dublin, and then back to Exeter, so the timings were the other way round. We're not planning to sail back - the weather in late September/October is too unpredictable for a crew of ageing blokes, and I don't want to be storing a boat ashore in Ireland for the winter.

I flew a surveyor out from Sussex to Dublin for my pre-purchase survey. I booked the tickets on-line and he did a day trip. Wasn't expensive. Had to supply some tools that he couldn't bring with him on the plane but that wasn't a problem.
