Yacht Scuttled

Anyone else see the press report about the guy who scuttled his yacht in Dartmouth to prevent his (estranged) missus from selling it?

Report said it was a luxury 40' ketch rigged job worth £100k which she had offered for sale at £40k.

He got on board during darkness and hammered the seacocks, before making good his escape and handing himself in to Police in Lincoln(?)

They reckon that salvage will cost about £35k

Seems a hell of a waste of a good boat just to teach swmbo a lesson. I would have bought it off him for £5 and repatriated it in North Wales - I'm sure she would have been just as p*ssed off and he could have saved himself the salvage fees and all the legal shenanegans.

The advert she put in the Herald Express (Torbay paper) says it was 53' and DHA are sending the owner a bill for £10k - apparently.

I'm surprised she could sell it. The Bill of Sale for my boat is in my name and my wife would have no right to sell it without my permission. Even in joint names, he should be able to stop the sale.

They spent a lot of time living aboard. She left him taking the kids. Her new lover put the ad in the newspaper.

How would you feel if you had lost your kids and now the bloke who has your missus wants to take your home from you at a knock down price? I might be inclined to put a hammer to the sea cocks as well.

The guy has gone missing, don't blame him, but the fuzz said that they are not interested and it is a matter for the harbour authority.

Boat has now been raised and landed at the admiralty wharf by Dartmouth college. Space he was occupying in the river is now taken up by rather large warship - definitely not scuttled!!!

It was reported earlier that DHNA would be sending the bill for recovery to the owner, which means she will be expected to pay. That would probably count as a satisfactory result for her ex!

Just for posterity, I think I should draw attention to an article published in the Mail on Sunday by female owner of said yacht in an attempt to set the record straight. (Bought paper for free "Silkwood" DVD, honest!)

Briefly paraphrased from the Mail report:
Couple had / were living aboard; Bought yacht after wife received an inheritance, having previously cruised Caribbean for several years. Relationship starts breaking down. Husband set off for S/H sail to Caribbean "Something he had always wanted to do", but turned back after 7 days when he heard wife was going on holiday with friends. They fell out, and decided to sell boat to settle joint debts. Jointly agreed asking price, and husband placed ad in paper. More falling out over who would look after children, and in a fit of rage, husband scuttles boat & disappears.

Mail manage to string this out over 2 full pages, though.

Hope it all works out for all concerned.
