Yacht Names

Read the SSR notes in #55 above - Ships must have a name before they can be registered.

It says that, and there's a compulsory name field in the application but there's nothing whatsoever to stop me putting my Kayak on the SSR as "Red Kayak" or the OP putting his boat on the SSR as "Westerly Discuss 4534". The vessel type drop down list on the SSR application page includes vessels that typically aren't named (Inflatable, Wet Bike, Hovercraft) so they're expecting unnamed boats which, I presume, is why they don't require a name written on the boat, just a number. The name section in the MSA 1993, effectively lists all the things that *don't* apply to Small Ships.

So AFAICT so far the answers so far for the OP are:
1) By default he doesn't need a name for his boat.
2) If he wants to go in the Part 1 register he needs a name.
3) If he wants a radio licence he will need to write something in a name field, but, in practice it seems that doesn't have to be a name (maybe someone else can check what the actual name requirements are for VHF License).
4) If he wants an SSR he will have to write something in a name field but it doesn't have to be a name, and doesn't have to be written on the boat. The SSR number does have to be on the boat.

Thank you for your efforts in putting all that together Mark. :encouragement:

No probs at all, it's quite interesting and shaken up quite a few of my pre-conceived ideas. (Credit goes to Prv, too.)
