last week afloat in the Solent gave me plenty of time to indulge my odd fascination with boat names: I am always amazed at some awful names people choose for their vessels, but hey ho. However, one boat must take the prize, she was the "Mayday". Now, I know the May Day is a time for gaity and frollicking, but can you imagine the tea to be spilt in HMCG offices when they here something like "QHM, QHM this is yacht Mayday, Mayday, Mayday..."

Boat Names

Yes , a prize one I saw was "Our Soul"- it was a mobo,but said more about the owner I think!! That name would also be an interesting Ch16 call too.

Well I can't recall being told that, but I might have been, but common sense surely...

As for MoBo owners and the names they give, I have noticed a very marked difference between sail owners and Mobo owners viz a vis the naming of boats. Or I thought I had, till i saw "Prime Evil", a bright white plastic yacht anchored in Osborne bay. I accept that the owner might consider his boating to be his Prime Evil, and thus purely innocent as a name (better say, than chasing loose women or snorting coke whilst his kids starve), but the big devils face rather gave lie to the fact that this chaps next (or previous) vessel, will be a roaring mobo.

I always said that in the light of such names my boats would all sport the name "kevin". Alas, my current boat , a Dabber, carries the rather more genteel name of Matilda.

boat names

The yacht named ''Mayday'' was heading Nth along Portugal to Biscay whilst we where heading Sth to the Med. We could not believe it when we heard her calling in for a berth. Unless there is another yacht called Mayday?
 
One of my boats is "Toulong" Previous owner thought it would take him 18 months to refit, it took him 12 years and called it Toolong, due to a miss reading at the registration office, it became Toulong.
 
On this note, has anyone here changed the name of their Yacht?

Are the Insurance company ok with it or are there any 'procedures' you need to go through?

Can only be done at midnight on Hogswatchnight----you must circle the boat 3times one way chanting the old name then 3times the other way chanting the new name.THIS MUST BE DONE NAKED!!!


PS engage a good solicitor to be on call in case/when the plod arrive!

:D Yes I heard there was a pretty extensive procedure to follow. Rather alot of Champagne was required too If I remember right. :D

We had a power boat in our marina called WOFTAM.
Waste Of 'Furkin' Time and Money.

Just change it. As I refuse to have anything to do with vague superstitions about good and bad luck and boat name changing, we have changed the name of several of our boats and haven't given the matter another thought.

All the insurance company is interested in is whether the name is on the tender.

There's a very clear division between the macho aggressive names that racers give their sailing boats and the names that non racers do. No doubt "prime Evil" was a racer.

Two examples from Cardiff bay are "Jackhammer" and "Judgement Day" - both J109s.

I was manning the bridge (race control RMSR 2009) last Monday. Conversation went something like this:

"Station calling Spinnaker"
"Yes"
"Who are you?"
"Yes"
"What is the name of your boat, please?"
"Yes"
"Would you please spell the name of your boat?"
"YES ... Y - E - S"

Embarrassing moment for me. In my defence I would point out that we have entrants from twenty countries and sometimes the pronunciation of English is very interesting, to put it mildly.
