Yacht Moonchild, Kassiopi Harbour, Corfu, Greece

Since I started this thread I feel obliged to comment on the above.

My sole intention in starting this thread was to try and help the owner of the yacht, that's why it originally appeared on the CA forum. I restated that my intention was to help even more clearly in post #7. Having re-read this thread almost all of the (polite and well argued) posts have had the same intention, whether it was to help the boat involved or to point out the hazards of leaving yachts unattended for long periods.

I am dismayed that in the rather aggressive letter from the owner he has at no point said "thank you for tying to help me". Despite that rather telling omission; "you're welcome sir".

I re-read the thread and thought exactly the same Tony .... but if that's the guy's attitude then I couldn't be bothered to pursue it. :(

I can only add , what a nice man , I would had been very happy if I did something stupid like leaving my boat in an well use harbour , which is well known for people to cross anchor when just down the road there a very good Marina , and after doing sure a thing , someone happen to pull my anchor ( which is very likely in that harbour ) I for one would be very please for a total stranger to make the effort to contact me so I could get the problem seen to , but hey there always one .

The copy of the email from John would appear to be addressed specifically to "Melody" at Aegean Sailing. I think we now understand the circumstances of the "abandonment".

I'm not sure what conclusions you've drawn, but by my reading the reasons the message was addressed directly to Melody are probably that:
Melody was the first poster to be at all critical;
Melody's signature includes the means to find contact details.

Unless, of course, you know something we don't?

Quite right too.

I would be pleased if you were in any harbour I was in :)
 
It seems to be an ironic and unfortunate fact of life that, when you set out in a spirit of altruism to help others, you find yourself bedevilled by ill-luck and spiteful reactions from those you attempted to help.
I would like to comment that Tony is one of the most public-spirited people I've come across and a tireless volunteer for the Cruising Association as well as those visiting Crete.
Now "Moonchild" is in Kassiopi - Tony is the other end of the next door Aegean, in Ag Nikoloas.
Tony is also the CA HLR, so no doubt there is a chain of CA members, trying to help an ?ill-tempered? Scouse.

+1000 - they say no good deed goes unpunished.

The problem is that for all the support good people get when unfairly criticised, every criticism is nonetheless felt and the will to help can be gradually eroded until even good people end up thinking 'FU'.

I know no more than you. I concluded that the email from "John" was specifically aimed at Melody, This, due to the fact that she had pretty much said advised that if the yacht was causing a problem then the PP should be advised to get it sorted out, rather than the more pragmatic solutions offered by OP's here. And yes you are correct to point out that the least John could do would to be offer some thanks. Seems his guardianage wasn't up to much........
 
It seen to me the out come to all this is , next time moonchild is banging up on some wall people will just look the other way , which is a shame for the yacht .
I was the first to defend the owner when Melody wrote what she wrote , I not sure now , I should had bothered .
I still very surprise he not joined up to at less say thanks to Tony for bring it to people attention who may just saved the day for him and his yacht .

I only say it's Cardiff because the Port Police in Croatia want a port of registration on their official documents. If they decide to check for UK SSR on Google they will find:

UK Ship Register (The Registry of Shipping and Seamen)
MCA Cardiff
Anchor Court
Keen Road
Cardiff
CF24 5JW

My understanding is that's because SSR doesn't actually meet the UK's maritime treaty obligations, which require vessels to have a registered home port (and for the same to be legible on the stern). Could be fun if, in the name of rationalisation, the whole SSR apparatus is moved to Milton Keynes.

I always write Meriden as my port of registry. So far nobody has realised that Meriden is about as far from the sea as you can get in the UK....
