My understanding is that's because SSR doesn't actually meet the UK's maritime treaty obligations, which require vessels to have a registered home port (and for the same to be legible on the stern). Could be fun if, in the name of rationalisation, the whole SSR apparatus is moved to Milton Keynes.

Even more fun if they decided to relocate elseswhere in Wales.

For example Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

I bet the guys checking your documents would love that and I expect only catamarans would manage a legible name on the stern.

The enemy of catamarans is weight and all those letters would weigh a ton!

I always write Meriden as my port of registry. So far nobody has realised that Meriden is about as far from the sea as you can get in the UK....

I always thought it was Ashby-De-La-Zouch (I used to work with someone from there, and it's all he ever said) but apparently, it's not. it's actually Church Flatts farm, near Coton in the Elms in Derbyshire......
