The only time the mast need stabilizing sideways is when the mast angle is much over 60 /70 degrees to the deck. At this point the side shrouds will becoming tightish.

The higher the A frame in relationship to the mast the better.

My mast is 15 meters high and my A frame is 6 meters high.

If unsure try it with a length of wood and 2 shorter pieces of wood to make the A frame.

The thread is falling into the usual trap of running too long .... then we get repeating ... adding ideas ... and falling away from original good solutions.

The A frame is the way to go ... with some help on side guy-lines ... even if the fwd babystays are used by attaching ropes to and feeding them as the mast lowers ...

Once Christmas is over - its off to the local builders shop and buy two 3 ~ 4m metal fence posts .... will measure length needed from chainplates to bow fitting

Block and tackle temporarily hooked onto the last bridge. Or park between two boats and use their masts to lift yours charter companies use this last method fairly often


Saves a lot of faffing about with telescopic A frames and lash ups
