Yacht Clubs on the South Coast

We looked at Burnham and surroundings. But it’s noticeably colder that the south coast. OH needs every degree C she can get, hence we counted it out. That was pretty much the only reason though.

Assuming the delights of the island life doesn’t appeal to the OP and the chilly East Coast is ruled out I wondere if somewhere like Warsaw or Locks Heath area might appeal. As one plans retirement the location of hospital services become a priority and a down side of the island is hospital treatment even if for things like knee ops at Spire say in Soton for the knee ops ,being closer to London hospitals has its advantages for treatment logistics. I speak as one who grew up sailing from the medina and am now happy to be there for weekends etc but a permanent move back from leafy Surrey does have downsides. I can see however that the banks of the Hamble has many appeals (in addition to Tesco and country pubs plus Parkway airport ) and if advancing years lead to a desire to give up the flappy things then plenty of cheap moorings seem to lurk under the road bridge for your Nimbus or Aquastar or suchlike. It has non of disadvantages of Port Solent and seems a more pleasant area to live than say Gosport or Hayling Island even if it lacks the charm of Chi harbour and the properties of Bosham Hoe etc.

Well, yes to all of that. Our tale is not necessarily for repetition by everyone. We use a lot of ferry tickets for medical appointments, OH is well on the way to being the Bionic woman. You do get a good discount as a resident fortunately.

Are you talking about Southampton? Because I will deeply disagree about portsmouth/fareham/gosport. QA is dire and a reason to avoid the area if your health is on the wane. Bus transport is non-existent in many areas after 6pm (I give you: the service from port Solent). Department stores? All gone. Pound shops, mobile phone shops and charity shops a plenty. Perhaps I'm biased having actually gone to school in that cultural wasteland. Sailing and unrivalled marine services are the redeeming feature.

Edit: hmm...sounds like the OP may have private health insurance, not use busses and possibly has deliveries from fortnum's so maybe the above comment not so relevant.
Sorry, I wasn't clear. I was talking about Southampton. There are some areas of Gosport that I wouldn't mind living in but, for more than local shopping, you'd be heading to Gunwharf or Southampton. I'm sure there are bits of Portsmouth (Southsea?) that I wouldn't mind living in, but certainly not the bits I've seen. I may also be a bit biased in favour of Southampton General as a hospital, as they saved my life a few years back

Is it that much colder on the east? I only ask because I wouldn't have thought there was much difference. It is certainly much drier here, though it has been known to rain occasionally. I live near the city of Colchester and there are occasions when it is unbearably hot inland and it is pleasant to get out to the coast for the afternoon sea breeze.

I speak from experience, we have done our time on the east coast. In many ways just as lovely as anything in the south, but colder.

It restricts the field if you are just looking at YC's. Is it because you also want the Bar and Social events?
Otherwise, there are lots of boatyards that provide most other facilities such as shower's and parking.
Certainly both a Bar and Social events have their attractions but not absolutely essential.

Nice to have somewhere in the neighbourhood that does food and a pint at times

Just plonk it in Chichester Marina. House prices in the area are not completely bonkers because the train up to London is a bit of a bind.

We were in Chi Marina for a few years and it was probably our favourite location - nice surroundings even if you don't go out and fairly easy access from South of London.

Down side is queuing for the locks and those times when you get down there and find there isn't enough water to leave the berth. But we are seriously considering returning there.

Let me recommend the Warsash Sailing Club option; I've been a full member of that Club for 40 odd years and it has most advantages to other clubs- notably easy access to the Solent 20mins from the Hamble and an active Club Committee that provide moorings ( and dinghy storage when available} or allocated via the Harbour Authority and its own allocation on the Hamble. The waiting list for a mooring moves when prior Club mooring holders achieve a permanent mooring via the H.A. yacht racing is your interest there are the Hamble Combined Club events and Warsash Spring Series - one of the major events held by Warsash for several classes of yacht and standards of crew including the Club Trophy racing and dinghy racing. A further consideration is the training of the youngest family members termed Kippers , and older youngsters Cadets , as part of a RYA training scheme..
Currently the Club has no Catering facility, likely to do so later but the Bar (s) has plenty of choice of Beer and wines at reasonable prices.
Access to the club from the A27 is simple and easy however the Fareham Borough Council has just introduced parking charges in all coastal carparks, making long term parking expensive but still possible and easy access to the club and ferry or River Taxi if afloat on your moorings. Tucker and Munday do have moorings for hire but I believe are rather expensive. An early application the Harbour Office for a mooring is to be recommended.
Regrettably I am no longer an active member due to age, but the club is friendly and most members very helpful if you enquire as to details on 01489 583575 .

The solutions to queuing for the lock are simple.

1) Retire so that you can go out mid week. (alternatively adopt the marine version of WFH which is WFB)

2) Buy a shallow draft boat, then you can go out at low water when few seem to bother.
