The thread below about showers at yacht clubs left me wondering which clubs have facilities for over night stops and at what sort of cost. Personally I would always prefer a club to a marina so lets try and make a list.

I suggest we base on a fin keel 35 footer ( because I have one) and comment if moorings are only for bilgies or smaller boats. Cost info would help.

To start off:
Cardiff Bay Yacht Club - £10 per night berthing on pontoon, showers free
Cardiff Yacht Club - free berth on pontoon, free showers
Newport Uskmouth SC - free berth and showers but drying moorings not pontoon

plus from the other thread - Hardway SC £10 per night for a pontoon.

£15 on walk ashore pontoon, up to 10 metres maximum. £10 on buoys if available. Both include temporary club membership so all showers etc free.

The question of how much to charge is always a bit controversial, but we do charge our own members for staying overnight on the pontoon and the space we have is very limited. I think it is generally cheap compared to either Poole Harbour or the Solent, and Bar prices are the same for visitors and members.

Brixham YC pontoon

not sure about prices

I was looking at their web site the other day:

45p per foot, per night (4th night free), payable to the Bosun or the Bar.

Stay as long as you like, but we do like you to stay on the boat, and not use the pontoons as somewhere to "park up".

3 abreast maximum, and maximum length is 40ft.

1st come, 1st served, NO reservations.

Might be busy due to Regatta/championships on the following dates:
25th July - 8th August Larks & Enterprise Championships
21st August - 26th August Torbay Week
5th September Michelmores
3rd - 4th October Autumn Regatta

South Down YC (Strangford Louch NI)

South Down YC Strangford Lough NI - whoops typo in title)

Stayed here in 2007 for a few nights. Pontoon berth 40ft 2m fin. Free but gave a donation. Free showers.

How do we collate all this useful info so we've got it to hand?

When you think about it, the amazing fact is that not one of the major Solent based yacht clubs (sorry Marchwood) had the foresight or financial ba**s to build a marina back in the days when planning permission was possible. It was left to commercial bodies to do this.

Cowes Corinthian did. They still have a small marina and welcome visitors (or at least they did when we were there). Space is very limited, pay at the bar, sorry I can't remember the rates except that visitors pay more than members.

Yes of course they did, and it makes for a good venue for midsize keelboats. I recall doing the Impala Nationals there way back in the mid 1980s.

But the point I was really trying to make was that all the full-scale marinas - Hamble Point, Swanwick, Mercury, Cowes Yacht Haven, Lymington Yacht Haven, Berthons etc etc were all commercial builds. No big yacht clubs took the opportunity.

I guess the answer is Yacht Clubs at the time where not commercial ventures. They also in my opinion should never become such, or they will loose there core values.

Sadly clubs need to be RYA schools and often have professional staff so need to pull in some income to cover costs. That IMHO is how it should stay.
