Any tips? Charter companies? Cruising grounds?
Want to go with the family next winter, take a catamaran for the shallow draught, get to lesser visited places off the usual track. Gulf of Thailand or Andaman side? We lived there a few years back, so can do a bit of language and local customs...

We had our best holiday ever bare boating for a fortnight out of Phuket with sun sail about five years ago. Cruising grounds a delight. We spent a few days in phang nga and then went down past ko phi phi. Base staff very helpful. Few other yachts or any facilities about so we had to be pretty self sufficient. Remember a local chap giving me a ride on the back of his moped to the petrol station to fetch 2 cans of diesel. He then drove me back to the jetty. Refused all offers of baht for the trouble. This is very different to our Caribbean experience...

We went in April - In between season which meant little wind but also meant no spots were off limits - but more motoring. Anchoring off the beach to go ashore for elephant trekking was a first. Hope you like it

Went for 2 weeks charter more than 10 years ago with Sunsail and it was very good although the sailing was quite remote and we didn't see another boat for 2 days ! I'd advise sailing for 1 week or so around Phuket and then include a land holiday as part of the trip.

Hi - Have you booked? I'm going in the last 2 weeks of January 2016 with first week sailing and second in a beach hotel. Chartering a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 out of Phuket Yacht Harbour and planning to sail to Ko Phi Phi and Krabi. Charter company have supplied a cruising guide which looks like a "just what you need to know" rather than being a glossy publication. I'm looking forward to it.
