I have had a tub for maybe two years, I think it was Stelican who said it was good for removing rust marks. So I used it , rubbed it in again and again wiped off , but was useless . So today looking to declutter the boat of many tins and tubs , I decided to read the instructions before I throw it away. Ok I will do what it says on the tin , hey presto, IT WORKS.

It's oxalic acid with a thickening agent. If you want to save money you can just buy oxalic acid powder and dissolve it in warm water.

I swapped to citric acid dissolved in water... it's less nasty to breath in and is good at removing rust

I switched from wallpaper paste to corn flour. It thickens the mixture but doesn't dry sticky and can be washed off by hand. Oxalic acid is great stuff.

It may interest people to know that Citric Acid is a component that used to be used in catalyst for Polyester Resin ... anyone remember the aroma of catalyst ??

Buy 500gm or a Kilo online £15.00 ?
Put decent amount of the Oxalic xtals in 1/2 or 1/3 full bucket of warm water then add bottle of cheapo Fairy Liquid (this helps remove dirt). 99p.
Apply with a decent sized old paint brush............................
More than enough to treat the entire above the water line hull of a 12m MoBo and watch 12 months worth of Brown East Coast Stain disappear.

That little Face Cream sized pot of Y10 contains a very small % of Oxalic.........probably more expensive than printer ink .

As a member of the public you can apply for a licence for £40 but your application will be refused if there are alternatives available. For cleaning boats there is an alternative available, premade products like Y10, so your application will be unsuccessful. You don't get your £40 back either.

Just looked that up. Rules changed in 2023 it seems. Glad I bought several Kilos a couple of years ago. I had a feeling something was up when it vanished off eBay.

Over here and I believe it can be similar in UK - it all depends on what the Oxalic is 'branded as' and its stated on label purpose.

I believe that if its sold as 'Brick cleaner' - you can buy it as 'joe public' ......

Over here in Latvia (EU rules) - I can buy kilos of it as Brick / Builders cleaner .... without any restriction at all .... but in the Yachty shops - its gone, with comments no longer allowed.......

No problem a few months ago, buying 500g of 99.50 % Oxalic over the interweb !

If looking at Brick / Patio Cleaner - many are Hydrochloric Acid - so careful check of label if going that route. Oxalic based is out there - some branded as rust remover (again check label as Phosphoric Acid is common rust treatment).

eBay sells diluted Oxalic .... mmmmm not really good enough for many boats that need a strong solution.

If anyone sails in my local area - I am happy to take them to local shop and then can buy as much as you like in pure powder form !!

I used to buy it from bee keeping supplies; just looked, no longer available. Only premix. The premix on eBay, etc is only 5%. Wood workers supplies still sell the crystals, but as already said, only to professional users. Need to make friends with a furniture restorer.

No problem a few months ago, buying 500g of 99.50 % Oxalic over the interweb !

There may be a few places still selling it to the public - now illegally. If so, get it while you can. The new legislation is clear, so they won't get away with it for long.

But what % blend is that ... there are jobs where only maximum saturation is good enough ..... many jobs where strong solution is called for ...

The 5% etcv as sold as Patio Cleaner etc is just not good enough.

Yup, always a good idea to RTFM!

Also ideal for removing stains on all stainless steel and where stainless meets gelcoat ie. at the bottom of stantions etc.
