Those, like me, who are aficionados of XyGrib may have experienced poor response recent,y. David Gal says "There has been a surge in demand in the last few weeks and the grib server is overloading.

I am in the process of launching a larger server to cope with this."

Unfortunately, only available on a laptop, it is, in my opinion, the best viewer. A little clumsily, I have been using Saildocs to get the files and viewing on XyGrib.

ZyGrib is what I use but I think before that I used to use a program called XGrib so that might be the source of the confusion, if confusion there be.

I remember now that ZyGrib was replaced by XYGrib a year or two ago but I decided to persevere with the old version.

I have used both zygrib and xygrib - i am a fan of the project.

Expedition - the navigation program by nick white is expensive and has more features than most sailors need.

however - it can be used for free without a license, with all of the grib viewing features active. It is a very good grib viewer.

without a license, the (extensive) networking - which allows you to connect to instruments, as well as the optimal routing is disabled.

Downloads - Expedition Marine

if i was just going to use it as a grib viewer, i would probably use the non-4D version

if you have Mac OS or iOS.., consider LuckGrib

LuckGrib

it is also very good - not free, but not expensive either

ZyGrib was pickled some while ago. It still works but has not and will not be amended or maintained in any way. the “owner” had to cease any further work on it for personal reasons. David Gal took it over with the owner’s agreement and blessing - you can find the thread on YBW and has greatly improved it. In addition to the GFS, he has made other models available including some Limited Area Models. You can obviously carry on using ZyGrib but XyGrib offers more. It works the same as ZyGrib. To download software, go to OpenGribs - XyGrib for Windows, MacOS and Linux versions.

I have heard from David this morning, he says, “I have just doubled the throughput of the grib-server. This should improve performance of requests during peak demands.”
