Having recently acquired a boat fitted with an XM DSC VHF radio, I feel the need to install a GPS to feed it—the GMDSS functions of DSC are virtually pointless, so far as I can see, without an automated position. The radio requires NMEA0183, which uses RS-422 as a hardware protocol, according to some digging I've done—though I could believe otherwise. According to the manual (thanks pvb), the set should have contained a GPS connection cable. This did not accompany the vast hoard of useful equipment the previous owner passed on with the boat, so I am now slightly confused as to pinout; according to the manual, ' "+" yellow, "-" green', which doesn't really help all that much!

The concern is that the XM DSC has a GPS cable terminated in a DIN-8 connector (http://freespace.virgin.net/tom.baldwin/pinout-8din.html). Presumably their proprietary GPS cable plugged into this and led to a nice pair of wires, in the colours specified; could somebody with one of these magical cables possibly advise me on which pins lead to which wire? It would save me stripping back the wire leading to the connector and having a go at a sort of electronics Russian Roulette—will I get the right one, or release the magic smoke?

I have ordered a uBlox NEO 6M GPS module; I've used them before and found them perfectly workable, even up to about 90,000 feet, so they should do for an Achilles 24! I have checked the raw output of one I have in another project at home, and it seems to match NMEA0183 sentence format, and the modules are rated to 5V operating voltage.

In summary: does anybody know what the pinout of the DIN GPS connector on the XM DSC VHF is?

Many thanks in advance,
