Would you touch this with a bargepole?

I'm looking for a little boat of my own, and it just happens that I've been told about a Folksong. All can find out about it, without travelling to see it, is that it's a grp Folkboat derivative that has circumnavigated. Further investigation has revealed that the boat in question has indeed circumnavigated. Now I'm prepared she'll need a survey, and all the sails and rigging will probably need replacing, but does grp start to crack up, or get stress fractures after that amount of flexing?

If the boat was properly built in the first place the mouldings should be perfectly OK. But that is a big if for a boat that has been so heavily used, and a Survey is essential. Much will depend on the level of maintenance the boat received before during and after her 'big trip' - so be prepared for worn/worn out rig, sails, gear etc

Its a bit like high miler cars: a neglected car will be scrap at 100,000, while a well maintained one can do 2 or 3 times that mileage.

A very close inspection and a good survey will soon tell you if the boat is in good condition or not. I think it's history tells you it is the sort of boat to look after you whatever happens. If you want to do your own inspection before getting a survey done then can I suggest you look at any survey from a reputable surveyor and take some notes on the items looked at. Go prepared with a list of things to inspect, find out, examine etc. that way you will ensure you have the information and take a good look at everything.

Always worth a look, I reckon. I bought a Folkdancer which is another plastic folkboat of about same vintage, which is skinnier and lower than anything else in the vicinity. Long keel, generic hull type well proven through cruiser racer origins and early transats. Expect it to be slippery but wet. Shouldn't need to reef until force 5 because its a proper boat !
Osmsis problems? See other threads. Rigging strains ? Chainplates ?
Best of luck. be hardheaded and be prepared to walk away. Bid low!
