I took my inflated life jacket off in order to have my arms free for winching the dinghy out of the water. When the lifeboat arrived and I was asked "Haven't you got a life jacket?" I showed them my inflated jacket and nipped below for another.
The water struck me as surprisingly warm. The HH showerproof jacket I had on was zipped up, and elasticated at the waist. My top half seemed only a bit damp, but my cotton trousers seemed ten times their weight with water. Bare feet come into their own in these conditions. Having been deposited on the slip, left my name and address with the Coastguard, and borrowed a mobile to phone home, I drove to the home of the lender of the outboard to break the bad news. He sat me down with a cup of tea, then I drove home. I felt chilly for the first time as I entered my house at about 1745.
