Coming to a TSS near you.....

Ten of them....

At 400 metres long the Triple-E ships on order by Maersk Line are larger than any vessel of any kind currently on the water. The height (above baseline) of Triple-E is 73 metres.

Other principal measures of the Triple-E include:

  • o Beam: 59 metres
    o Draught: 14.5 metres
    o Deadweight: 165,000 metric tonnes
    o Top speed: 23 knots

Not a problem.

a) Large square areas of steel gives a huge radar target.
b) It will travel very predictably between TSSs, straightest route.
c) It will have top qualified crew, this is no rust bucket on a budget.

Much more predictable and easier to deal with than a fishing boat.

Draught 14.5 m

I get giddy with that much water under my keel, so not likely to be much of a threat where I sail. Same will be true of E coasters.

My 2002 chart of Harwich Harbour gives it as dredged to 14.5, and I believe it's been deepened since then. E coasters will be seeing them, just as we saw Emma Maersk.

I love how the Mail has described it as being, at 1300feet long... 6 times the length of the QE2, the equivilant of 4 jumbo jets!
