Wot\'s Worse

On the way down the A3 on Saturday morning doing 70mph when flashing lights appear in the rear view mirror and some idiot in a 5 series BMW overtakes with a trailer on the back doing what must be at least 100mph. Oh I wished for him to suffer a jack-knife and for his laser to disintergrate along with his car, then maybe he might be more considerate and safer from his experience.

On the way home that evening, I get passed by a Saab estate with a laser on the roof doing approx 100mph.

Are all laser car drivers f.......!!! idiots and don't give a toss about any one else, or has old age made me synical miserable git.

Re: Wot\'s Worse

I think there's a link between owning lasers and fast cars (I confess to both myself) but the blasting down motorways at irresponsible speeds tends to go more with the brand of car.

The police refer to things like Porsches and BMWs as '90% cars', i.e. 90% of them are above the speed limit. I have since discovered there is one 100% car around today, i.e. I have never seen one doing less than 70 on a motorway unless the road was blocked in front of it.

Any guesses?

Re: Wot\'s Worse

I had a similar experience on the M27 saturday pm, but this was a BMW X5 towing a 'ZapCat'... He was jamming himself up against the rear bumper of all the dawdlers in the middle ( grannies cruising) lane, and then just ended up doing 80-90 in the outside lane.....

Re speeding with boards and boats on the roof rack, years ago i remember a test conducted on a big Merc (cant remember which one) and they found that with 2 windsurfers on the roof side by side, at 100mph there was sufficient lift to raise the front wheels off the ground!!

When we were kids my dad had the entire roofrack and our Gremlin dinghy come off the roof on the way down to our hols in South Devon... It just missed the car behind and no one was hurt, but God! it was a wake up call. I never ever put stuff on a rack unless its held down by at least 2 independent fastenings and often even with a load strap going thro the tops of the windows inside the car.

Re: Wot\'s Worse

I once was towing a close-coupled car trailer with a Vauxhall Viva on it. It was a quiet Sunday morning. The tow car was a new Triumph TR7 (tells you how long ago this was). It started snaking at 55mph on the motorway.
At the time there was a theory that this was a resonance that you could drive through, so I accelerated. It had got so bad at 65mph that I decided I couldn't control it so, as the trailer came out on the offside ( we were using all three lanes by now), I braked hard.
The trailer overtook me and spun us around in a complete pirouetting outfit. Twice.

We came to rest, undamaged. Had a quick look around and drove on. Quite a bit more slowly.

Re: Wot\'s Worse

It's confession time...

I once lost my Topper of the roof of the car on the M40 heading south.. It was brand new. Just picked it up from GUildford Marine and made the mistake of letting the dealer lash it to the car instead of doing it myself.

He made the mistake of making sure it was well coupled to the roof rack but didn't make a very good job of tightning the roof rack to the car.. I have since learnt (and its pretty obvious when you think about it) that these things need to have the painter attached to the front bumper as well to stop them from lifting. I was only doing about 55 when it took off. It travelled about 200 yds towards Banbury skidding along on the roofrack until it came to a halt in the inside lane. Fortunately somebody stopped to give me a hand to pick it up. It fortunately did not get hit by any of the traffic.

I got years of useful service from it after that so they are prety well built little boats.

PK.

Re: I tow pretty fast.

Boorish driving is boorish driving whether your towing or not. Getting to close to people and flashing your lights is just being a tosser.

If you are experienced at towing, have a well matched rig and you've balanced the tow right, you can tow at 100mph without any real drama. All German caravanners travel at terminal velocity all the time, it's only in England were caravaners ponce about at 50mph. It's only in England were you see caravans upside down on the motorway.

Re: I tow pretty fast.

Just a reminder for those who weren't aware that the speed limit for towing is 60 and towing vehcles aren't allowed in the 3rd lane of a motorway. When I bought my last trailer the shop told me that. I wasn't aware of the rules till then.

It's surprising how many odd rules there are like that. When I started driving a minibus I discovered that it is restricted to 60 on dual carriageways and motorways and 50 elsewhere.

Can't count white vans as 10% of them are chugging along in the slow lane in a cloud of smoke.

The car I was referring to is the Audi TT.

I've still not seen one doing less than 80.
