Wot's a gennaker?

A cross between a cruising chute and a genoa.

Mine is cut rather like a large genoa - something like 190%, but made of nylon not dacron but I have also seen the the term used to describe something like a "Code 0".

No - it's the name for a portable generator that has been subjected to a very high load for and extended period of time. Rendering said generator defunct - or knackered in the colloquial.

Gennaker - true or false

I am guessing that a gennaker is more like a code zero genoa (neither set from a sprit) and cruising shute (sometimes set from a sprit) is similar to an asymmetric spinnaker (set from a sprit).

All very confusing and I think that the terms are used differently by various bods.

Is it set from a sprit?

Is it on a furler?

What is the difference between a cruising chute and a gennaker?

What is the difference between a gennaker and a code zero?
Can be set from sprit of furler but doesn't have to be

I would say that a Code 0 was a particular type of gennaker. Code 0 is very much a racing sail - it is the flattest cut sail that the rules allow to be classed as a spinnaker rather than a headsail. My gennaker is flatter cut than that, but you would never see one on a racing boat.

There is probably an overlap between cruising chute and gennaker, but in general I would say that a gennaker is set with a tauter luff, and is flatter cut, than a typical cruising chute.
