Hi all ..... This must have been posted before somewhere !! ... But hey ... I met a RTW sailor that had a set of charts to get him around the globe , he bought them in bundles if I remember rightly , printed in black and white, not on the best quality paper but did the job , thanks but not after a lecture on the rights or wrongs of this .... Just after where I can purchase these .... Regards ...

Way behind the times - you can download the whole world charts for free on C-Map from many sites - who'd even consider bad photocopies of doubtful origin.

We and many others use Bellingham Chart Printers (Tidesend) We prefer their 'reduced' size folios.

They are very used to dealing with cruising sailors on the move. The are very good at getting charts to you in remote locations. Although I am a very happy customer and I know many other cruisers that swear by them and we have folios from them covering most of the globe onboard, we mostly use electronic charts these days. The paper as a never used backup or for route/cruising area planning.

Interestingly, whilst not very scientific, I did a quick straw poll in a cruisers boatyard in Thailand over xmass. I would say the all of the cruisers there that I spoke to, most of whom have been on the move for a very long time, have switched to electronic charts as their main source. Everyone used electronic charts as their primary tool most seemed have no use for paper at all these days. I had similar conversations in Trinidad and Grenada last year as well.

You still need the charts to go with it. The latest version of Open CPN (4.0.0) went live two days ago, is much improved and is free so if you have access to the charts why pay for this software?

We swear by OpenCPN. A few years ago paid good money for not one but two different commercial carting products and charts. These days we use OpenCPN exclusively. It will become eve better later this year when they get the android version going :-)

It makes the PC become a chart plotter with the (obviously free) chart download on the site. It interfaces with GPS and/or AIS - not bad for 100bucks

As does OpenCPN, for free.

Plus OpenCPN interfaces to AIS, ASI SARTs, GPS, Instruments and RADAR. And it displays GRIB files, weatherfax etc. And it has a free weather routing plugin etc.

I too managed to find CM93 charts some time ago. Can't remember where and the link most likely would be dead now anyway, but I do remeber it being HUGE in download. If memory serves it is some 1500 mb.

Covers the world i believe - didn't check every corner yet, but US, UK, Europe inkl. inland Netherlands etc. are there.

Wasn't aware of the OpenCPN v4 release, def. will get that right away. Thanks for heads up :encouragement:

I think the 2010 ones are the last ones that will work with Open CPN. The file is more like 3GB, I still have the link to where I got them from but they're not there any more. Had I known the cpn people were doing an android version I probably wouldn't have bought Navionics for my tablet. Saying that a fully functioning 7" touch screen colour chartplotter for for whole UK for 90 quid all in isn't bad...

1.6 gb zipped in my case, but stille quite a lump.

Edit: Upgraded to OpenCPN 4.0 which works great also with the CM93 maps. :)
